Tailgate: Convenience opening does not open automatically
E46 compact with option 493
Complaint:
Tailgate with convenience opening does not open at temperatures below approx. 15
°
C,
even though the mechanism moves smoothly.
Cause:
At these temperatures, the pushing force of the pneumatic springs is not sufficient to push
the tailgate up (please refer to Owner's Manual).
Affected vehicles:
E46 compact with special equipment (option 493 stowage pack - includes convenience
opening)
Manufacturing period: March 2000 until November 2001
Remedy:
In case of complaint, both pneumatic springs on the tailgate must be replaced. With the
new pneumatic springs, the convenience opening will work at temperatures down to 0
°
C.
Procedure:
Note:
Make absolutely certain that the open tailgate does not close unexpectedly by propping it
up with a suitable support.

Remove the tailgate pneumatic springs. To do this, unclip the locking clamp on each
ball socket.

The two ball pins on each side can remain on the vehicle provided they are correctly
fitted.
The ball pin with the higher hexagon head (6 mm) should be fitted to the bodyshell.
The ball pin with the lower hexagon head (4 mm) should be fitted to the tailgate.

Clip the new pneumatic springs onto the ball pins and secure with locking clamps.

Check the ease of motion of the slightly stronger pneumatic spring and if necessary fit
the new ball pin with part number 07 14 7 075 104 onto the tailgate.

Remove the spring elements from the two tailgate hinges as per Repair Instructions 51
24 330; they are no longer required.
