DME fault code 67/68 - VANOS end position regulation
E46 / M52TU
Complaint:
Whenever a camshaft pulse generator (inlet or exhaust) is renewed, the engine will enter
emergency running mode, i.e. the engine will run with reduced torque and output.
The following fault codes are stored in the DME fault memory:
Fault code "67"
VANOS end position regulation - fault on inlet camshaft
and/or
Fault code "68"
VANOS end position regulation - fault on exhaust camshaft
The "Check Engine" lamp comes on in US vehicles.
The above fault pattern can also occur after an exchange of the engine, VANOS
adjustment unit or the exhaust camshaft sensor gear.
Cause:
New, improved pulse generators (inlet and exhaust) were introduced into series production
on 26.06.1998.
These new pulse generators must be combined with the new DME program version
introduced into series production on 17.06.1998.
The parts sales department will in future only provide the new pulse generators. This also
applies to vehicles with the old DME program version from start of series production to
16.06.1998.
The pulse generators old/new can be identified by the 7-digit part number printed on the
part.

Procedure:
In case of replacing a camshaft pulse generator (inlet or exhaust), the VANOS adjustment
unit or the engine on the above vehicles, the DME control unit must also be reprogrammed.
The necessary data can be found on CD15 or a higher version.
The DME control unit must also be reprogrammed whenever the exhaust sensor gear is
