Complaints affecting the engine and transmission
E46 / M54 with H-SMG GS6-37
Complaint:
•
Engine cuts out when braking.
No faults stored.
•
During coasting, an electronic engine management LED is lighting up sporadically.
The check engine LED is lighting up briefly and the SMG (sequential manual
transmission) is switching automatically from automatic (cruise mode or drive mode) to
manual mode. If sport mode has been selected, it is deactivated (LED on "Sport"
button goes out). Depending on the car's road speed, if the transmission is in manual
mode, it may also upshift automatically.
No faults stored.
•
Engine cannot be started, start inhibitor is active.
Locking and then unlocking the vehicle enables the engine to be started.
The "EWS tampering" fault has been stored in the DME (Digital Motor Electronics).
Cause:
SMG relay is faulty.

E46 with M54 engine and H-SMG GS6-37 (manual gearbox)
Manufacturing period: start of series production to 14 June 2004
Procedure:
In the event of a customer complaint, read out the fault memory.
If a fault listed under "Complaint" is pending and the fault memory search produces the
result given, a reworked SMG relay must be fitted.
For this purpose, the relay socket must be replaced as described in Enclosure 1.
