Crackling noise from side windows when they are closed
E46 Convertible
Complaint:
The closed side windows on the driver's and/or passenger's door crackle when driving on
poor road surfaces.
Cause:
Relative movement between parts causes the side windows to rub against the convertible
top seal, causing the crackling/creaking noise.
Affected vehicles:
E46 Convertible
Manufacturing period: start of series production until end of series production
Remedy:
In case of customer complaint, all four side windows must be coated with Aquapel.
Procedure:
Note:
The condition for this is that the side windows have been set to the basic setting as
described in repair instructions 51 32 154.
1.
Thoroughly clean all 4 side windows with BMW glass cleaning polish (see electronic
parts catalogue), taking note of the instructions for use on the container.
2.
Coat the upper section of the side window (the section that fits into the convertible top
seal) with Aquapel (see illustration).
Important:

The desired result will only be achieved if the Aquapel coating is not broken. For
this reason, wipe the area to be treated several times with the cloth soaked in
Aquapel.

Follow the instructions to the letter on how to apply Aquapel.
3.
Treat the inside and outside of the seal for the upper area of the rear side windows (B-
pillar), which fits into the Convertible top seal (2), with a special anti-friction coating
(see electronic parts catalogue).
4.
Clean any dirt accumulation from the window guides with a brush.
