Common rail injectors
E38, E39, E46 / M57
Situation:
Large numbers of injectors are currently being replaced in service on BMW M57 engines
due to various complaints.
The main reasons for this are acoustics and idling characteristics of the engine, engine
cutoff under load and secondary damage caused by high-pressure pump failure.
Only in a few cases is it necessary to replace all injectors.
Affected
vehicles:
All BMW models with M57 diesel engine and Common Rail injection system
Manufacturing period: start of series production until February 2003
Procedure:
A. Noise emitted by engine
In case of customer complaint, first clarify whether the acoustic characteristics of the engine
warrant a complaint.
Note:
In comparison to swirl chamber engines, direct injection diesel engines have a
harder combustion noise. Moreover, the atomisation characteristics of the injectors
is more acoustically noticeable on direct injection diesel engines.
If this is the case and there is no record in the DDE control unit fault memory, the correct
locking of the air ducts from the microfilter housing to the splashboard must be checked on
E39 vehicles.
In the next step, read off from the DDE control unit whether on EU2 vehicles software
version 86 (series production since April 1999) and on EU3 vehicles software version B1
(series production since September 2000) is programmed.
If this is not the case, program the respective data status onto the control unit.

EU2:
E38 until 03/2000
EU2:
E39 manual transmission up to 09/1999
E39 automatic transmission up to 03/2000
EU3:
E46 and E38/E39 as per above periods
If the complaint persists despite up-to-date data status, measure the smooth running of the
engine with the DIS tester. When doing this, the atomisation characteristics of the injectors
are compared with each other during the main injection phase.
Note:
The corresponding test module can be called up on the DIS tester using the
following path:
Function selection - Service functions - Drive - Digital Diesel Electronics - Smooth
running measurements.
An injector should be replaced if its value is >+4. If the value for the no. 5 and 6 cylinder
