Engine stalls
E36/7, E46, E53/M54
Complaint:
-
The engine intermittently stalls when the steering wheel is turned to full lock
-
The engine intermittently stalls when the brakes are applied hard at an engine speed
of 1,700 rpm (automatic transmission only)
Cause:
-
High power draw of power steering pump when steering wheel is turned to full lock
-
DME air mass signal incorrectly evaluated under certain driving conditions
Affected vehicles:
E36/7 (Z3), E46 four-wheel drive, E53 (X5), all with engine M54 B30, manual or automatic
transmission
Manufacturing period: start of series production until 31 July 2000
Remedy:
Since 31 July 2000, an optimised DME data status has been installed in series production.
In case of complaint, read off the fault memory and program the DME control unit using
"Programming Drive Train P23.1" or a later version.
Procedure:
For CD V23.0, a so-called Update CD - available from the end of August 2000 - has been
issued.
The optimised DME data status can be loaded onto DIS/MoDiC via "1st DIS Update CD for
CD V23.0".
The procedure to be followed for installing the Update CD is described in Diagnosis and
Encoding Information bulletin IDC "DIS Update 004/00-5".
When Update CD has been correctly installed, the application version number will be
"Programming Drive Train P23.1".
It is only necessary to load the Update CD once.
The DME control unit must be reprogrammed after the Update CD has been installed.
The optimised DME data will of course be included in subsequent DIS CD versions (CD
V24.0, etc.) .
Note:
If a complaint is received and the vehicle has already had its idling speed increased to
improve idling stability, this will be reset to the factory default setting by the reprogramming
of the DME control unit.
In conjunction with the new DME data status, the idling speed set at the factory will provide
the best possible compromise between idling stability, vibrations and acoustics, and should
not be changed.
Reimbursement:
Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms as follows:
