Special tools for diesel engine M57

E38, E39, E46

Situation: 

Note:

For increased clarity of Special Tools Information bulletins, SI 1 13 98 (340) has been
deleted from TIS and its contents integrated into this Service Information bulletin.

New special tools are required and have been introduced for repairs on the diesel engine
M57. 

Please refer to Enclosures 1 and 2.

The diesel engine M57 is BMW's first 6-cylinder diesel engine with common rail technology
and is for the first time introduced in E39 vehicles.

Extractor tool 13 5 250, consisting of parts 13 5 251, 13 5 252 and 13 5 253, was offered as
a stores tool with Service Information bulletin 1 06 98 (306) and must be ordered for use
with the clamping claw. 

Please refer to Service Information bulletin 1 06 98 (306).

The new radial shaft seals in the end cover (gradual introduction for all 4 and 6-cylinder
engines) are supplied as a spare part with a fitting tool with which they must be fitted. 
For this reason, the present slip sleeve 11 2 213 must be disposed of immediately after the
old radial shaft seals have been fitted.

Procedure:

Offer tools will be supplied to every contractual partner with a tools agreement.

Store tools will only be supplied to order.
