Replacing timing chain (N42/N46)
Special tools required:
•
11 5 120
•
11 5 140
•
11 9 190
•

Necessary preliminary tasks:
•
Remove intake filter housing with air-mass flow sensor.
•
Remove ignition coils.
•
Remove all spark plugs.
•
Remove cylinder head.
•
Remove positioning motor for eccentric shaft.
•
Remove alternator drive belt.
•
Remove vibration damper.
•
Remove both solenoid valves.
•
Secure engine in installation position.
•
Lower front axle support.
•
Remove oil sump.
After removing oil sump, provisionally reinstall front axle
support and remove special tool for securing engine in
installation position.
Important!
For removal of the timing chain, the central bolt must be
slackened and later removed.
After the central bolt is released, the sprocket wheels of the
timing chain and the oil pump will no longer be non-positively
connected to the crankshaft (risk of damage).
Balancing shafts rotate and must be readjusted as described
later.
