About the E34 5 Series
The E34 was the third-generation 5 Series, made from November 1987 to 1996, with a Touring estate added in 1992 for the first time. It brought the 5 Series its first all-wheel drive (525iX), its first V8, traction and stability control and a six-speed manual. Nine engine families were used over its life.
What these manuals cover
- Four-cylinder petrol: the 518i (M40, M43) and the 518g natural-gas Touring.
- Six-cylinder petrol: the 520i, 525i and 525ix (M20, M50), and the 530i and 535i (M30).

Tip: these are BMW factory manuals, listed by model, engine and body rather than by year. The code in brackets is the engine (M54, N52 and so on), and the last word is the body: SAL saloon, TOUR Touring (estate), COUPE, CONVER convertible, COMP Compact (hatchback), ROADST roadster, OFFRD for the X models.
