Servicing airbag systems after they have triggered
E28, E30, E31, E32, E34, E36, E23
Situation:
In the event of a frontal collision at higher speeds, this safety function is triggered on
vehicles with the airbag option.
For the airbag system to trigger, at least one of the two impact sensors must be in a closed
circuit with the sensor in the diagnostic unit.
The impact sensors are located one on each of the two wheel arches.
The impact sensors must no longer be used after being activated with airbag ignition.
Affected
vehicles:
E23, E28, E30, E32 - all models
E31, E34, E36 manufacturing period up to September 1993
Procedure:
If the airbag has been triggered on the above vehicles, the following components must be
replaced as a matter of course:
•
Airbag with contact ring
•
Belt tensioner (if installed)
•
Passenger's airbag (if installed)
•
Diagnostic unit
•
Both impact sensors (front sensors)
The wires must be mechanically and electrically checked for damage. Wires that have not
been damaged may remain in the vehicle.
The steering column and pedal assembly must be checked for deformations and replaced if
necessary.
Important!
Work may only be performed on the airbag system if the vehicle battery has been
disconnected.
Airbag units are only to be stored with the actual airbag facing upwards.
For other safety instructions, please refer to SI 65 05 89 (069).
