Situation:
The following models have different service intervals for approximately the first 15 000 km,
depending upon the conditions under which they are used: the 318tds from the start of
series production in Model Year '95, and E34 and E36 models with M51 engine as from
Model Year '96.
It is possible that the engine oil requires topping up between oil services and inspections.
To reduce the risk of engine damage due to failure to check the oil level on the part of the
driver, the amount of engine oil used on M41 and M51 engines has been increased by 0.5 l
as from 9/95.
In addition, the "Max" marking has been moved further up the oil dipstick. The gap between
"Min" and "Max" is now 30 mm. An identical oil dipstick can be used on both the M41 and
M51, and is available under part no. 11 43 2 246 521.
The oil sumps on these engines have not been modified.
Note:
The next edition of the E36 Owner's Handbook is to be revised accordingly.
No new edition of the E34 Owner's Handbook is to be published, so it will not be
revised.
Procedure:
The oil quantity listed under "Parts" below (with oil filter renewal) should be added at oil
services in the case of the above diesel models manufactured as from 9/95 or on earlier
vehicles with a retrofitted "30 mm" oil dipstick.
An increase in the oil level does not, however, alleviate the driver of the responsibility of
checking the oil level at regular intervals.
Important:
The engine should be "really hot" when an oil change is carried out to ensure that the
system is emptied thoroughly.
