Stiff shift into 1st gear, 
clutch not disengaging

All models with manual transm.

Situation: 

The following check list, whose points must be worked through one after the other until the
problem has been solved, has been drawn up to aid targeted processing of the following
complaints: "stiff shift into 1st gear of manual transmission" and "clutch not disengaging".

Affected vehicles:

All models with manual transm. 

Procedure:

1. 

Check the take-up point of the clutch.

-

If this point is particularly early,

-

check that the diameter of the clutch operating cylinder is correct (see Electronic
Parts Catalogue) (20 or 22 stands proud on operating cylinders with a cast-iron
casing, operating cylinder with 26 mm diameter recognizable by its aluminium
casing)

-

check that the clutch hydraulics are not leaking 

-

bleed the clutch hydraulics, 

see Repair Instructions 21 00 006

-

check the shift from neutral into 1st gear a number of times with the engine idling.
Has the problem been remedied?

2. 

Z3 and E36 with Getrag transmission only, manufacturing period 
10/95 to 7/96 
 Check the consistency of the oil in the manual transmission

-

Take an oil sample and if it is milky and discoloured pink, carry out an oil change.
"Mix" the transmission oil by running the engine at idle speed for approx. 2
minutes.

-

Check the shift from neutral into 1st gear a number of times with the engine idling.
Has the problem been remedied?
Note: 
 Due to its shorter gear lever, the gearshift in the Z3 is always somewhat stiffer.

3. 

Dismount the manual transmission, 

see Repair Instructions 23 00 022

-

Relieve the tension on the clutch operating cylinder slowly, because there is
otherwise a danger of the operating cylinder sucking in air.

-

Check that the centering sleeves are fitted, the cover plate is not bent and the
pilot bearing in the crankshaft moves easily

4. 

Check that the outer gearshift mechanism moves easily 

5. 

Clean the splining of the transmission input shaft

Uncover the clutch release system (lever and bearing)

-

Carefully wash out the profile with a cleaning agent and paint brush (do not
spray)

Remove furring from the splining profile with a wire brush
