Apparent oil leak
E34 / M51 with A5S 310Z (5HP18)
Situation:
Individual oil leaks on the automatic transmission A5S 310Z have been reported by the
dealer organisation. Investigations have shown that in most cases the oil has exited via the
transmission vent and wet the area transmission plug, oil sump and drive flange with oil.
This was then incorrectly diagnosed by the workshop personnel as a leak at the
transmission plug, the oil sump or the drive flange.
When driving with high loading states (mountain driving, trailer towing, heavy load etc.), the
transmission oil temperature may greatly increase, causing the transmission oil level to rise.
As a result, oil may exit via the vent.
Affected
vehicles:
525 tdsA E34 (saloon and touring) from start of series production to end of series
production.
Procedure:
Check the transmission oil level and specifically compare at approx. 50
°
C (setpoint is 30
°
to 50
°
C) so that the oil level is adjusted to the minimum. This measure can eliminate the
complaint. Clean the oily points on the transmission and take the vehicle for a test drive.
Then check the transmission again for leaks.
Note:
On vehicles from production prior to 9/92 with the original O-ring-quality transmission
plug, also refer to Service Information bulletin 24 07 93 (711).
