Exchange of airbag control unit

E31, E34, E36  US

Situation: 

The following fault may be entered in the fault memory after the airbag control unit with the
part number 65 77 8 369 828 has been fitted: "Seat-belt switch, driver or passenger -
Coding data does not match up with vehicle equipment". This fault cannot be cleared. This
fault entry is caused by the following conditions:

1.

The airbag control unit fitted beforehand had the part number 
65 77 8 352 763 (no longer available from the Parts department).

2.

The lock contact of the seat belt or the seat-occupancy detector (SBE) has been
mistakenly connected to the vehicle wiring harness when a seat-belt lock has been
replaced at some previous time.

Technical background: In contrast to the old control unit, the new one checks the
connection between the seat-belt-lock contact and seat-occupany detector (SBE). The
plausibility check using the Central Encoding Key (ZCS) leads to the above-mentioned fault
entry, because the above pieces of equipment, namely "seat-belt-lock contact/SBE", are
not stored in the ZCS for the vehicles in question.

Affected
vehicles:

E31 US - Manufacturing period: 09/93 to 03/94
E34 US - Manufacturing period: 09/93 to 06/94
E36 US - Manufacturing period: 09/93 to 06/94

Procedure:

Read out the VN line (V ersion N umber) of the ZCS.

1.

If the 6th (E31 US, E34 US) or 7th digit (E36 US) in the line is a "6", the wiring must be
modified as follows:

-

Disconnect battery

-

Open control-unit connector and unpin pins 8, 12 and 15

-

Insulate and tie back unpinned leads

-

Reconnect control-unit connector and battery

-

Clear fault memory

2.

If the relevant digit is not a "6", please carry out appropriate troubleshooting.

Note:

In this case, a different fault is present and the reimbursement instructions below do
not apply.
