should be disconnected for approx. 1 minute. Then reconnect, switch on the ignition and
carry out programming again.
Program aborts from DSC III
When programming vehicles from series E38, E39 (manufacturing period: September 1998
to December 1999), the program can abort if used in conjunction with DSC III.
In such cases, programming can be carried out correctly by insulating the DSC III control
unit from current circuit for the duration of programming. This is done by tripping the
following fuses:
E38: fuse 17 (engine compartment)
E39: fuse 31 (glove compartment)
In all such case, clear any fault codes stored after programming using the "Quick delete"
command in the diagnosis program.
Aborts from instrument cluster
In isolated cases there is the possibility of communications through the diagnosis wire
being affected by the instrument cluster during programming. In such cases, repeat
programming with the instrument cluster disconnected. Reconnect the instrument cluster
before calibrating the immobiliser.
After programming an EMS2 control unit (R50/R53), it is not possible to carry out encoding
or an EWS calibration. If this fault occurs, the battery or the instrument cluster software
must be reset (see Diagnosis).
Malfunctions on the diagnosis wire
On the engine control units ME7.2, M5.2.1 in engine M62, M5.2.1 in the M73 and M5.2 in
the M44 and M62, it can happen that renewed programming can no longer be executed
following a program abort. After trying again, the fault message: "Programming cannot be
performed without errors - repeat programming". Diagnosis is not possible.
Before repeating the programming of the control units listed above, the ignition must be
switched off and back on again.
After the ignition has been switched off, programming can be repeated without restriction.
Fault message display
Fault messages are displayed as straight text on the screen. The relevant fault code can be
called up by pressing the information button at the bottom right of the screen.
If the program repeatedly aborts, if programming is not possible or if programming times
are excessively long (please refer to point 8 "Programming times and quantity of data"),
please consult the technical consultancy department at your subsidiary or regional office.
Please keep the identification side of the affected control unit and the complete fault
message to hand.
