Emissions tester for statutory emissions test (AU) in Germany
BMW spark-ignition and diesel models
Situation:
On April 1, 2002, the latest version of Germany's emission-test ordinance in line with the
34th amendment of § 47 StVZO comes into force in Germany.
In addition to legal adjustments to the procedure already in practice, the emissions test
conducted on vehicles with a spark-ignition engine classified in emissions bracket EURO-3,
i.e. those equipped with OBD (On-Board Diagnosis), may only be performed using
emissions testers that incorporate or have been retrofitted with an appropriate OBD data
reader (scan tool).
In addition to the tester manufactured by AVL and already recommended by BMW, we
have now also approved the emissions and opacity tester built by Maha, Maschinenbau
Haldenwang GmbH. ScanTool as legally required by the new amendment for emissions
testing OBD vehicles is a constituent component of Maha's emissions and opacity tester.
Thanks to the Windows-based PC integrated into the emissions tester from Maha, the AU
QA system that will be a legal requirement as of July 1, 2002 will be able to be implemented
electronically, i.e. with a minimum of time, because the data required for the "defect"
statistics will be taken directly from the test certificate.
Thanks to the PC technology employed, this tester can be networked with the BMW or ASA
workshop network without any great difficulty and effort.
The hardware of this tester will be capable of performing the emissions test on diesel OBD
vehicles as currently under discussion and expected to be introduced in around 2004.
Furthermore, this tester will also be able to be used for the motorbike emissions test
expected for 2004 after being retrofitted with the relevant sensors and software.

Note:
The corresponding workshop procedures can only be conducted in accordance with BMW
specifications (FRUs etc.) if emissions testers approved by BMW are used.
The statutory requirements in Germany are then met.
