Hard gearshifts (all gears) / leak at torque converter sealing ring
Automatic transmission A5S 360/390R (GM5) on E46/E39/E36/7 with M52/M54, E53
with M54
Complaint:
1.
All gearshifts are extremely hard
2.
Noise from the oil pump
3.
Hard gearshifts together with fault 30 (mechanical torque converter clutch monitoring)
in transmission fault memory.
A combination of these faults can also occur.
4.
Oil loss from radial oil seal on torque converter
Cause:
In cases 1-3: Sliding seal in oil pump out of line.
In case 4: torque converter guide sleeve in oil pump out of line.
Affected
vehicles:
E36/7 M52/M54 with A5S360R /A5S390R (GM5 transmission)
E46 M52/M54 USA with A5S360R/A5S390R (GM5 transmission)
E46 M52 Japan with A5S360R (GM5 transmission)
E39 M52/M54 USA with A5S360R/A5S390R (GM5 transmission)
E46 M54 four-wheel drive with A5S390 R (GM5 transmission)
E53 M54 with A5S390R (GM5 transmission)
Manufacturing period: Start of series production until July 2001.
In case of complaints 1-3: from transmission serial number 55000 to 209255.
In case of complaint 4: start of series production until transmission serial number 413022.
Procedure:
In cases 1 to 4:
-
Remove transmission oil pan and check condition of oil: transmission should not smell
of burning and should not be contaminated by wear.

Remove transmission and check torque converter for ease of movement: torque
converter should move easily.

Remove torque converter and check sliding surface of radial oil seal at torque
converter pin for signs of wear (grooves). Sliding surface on torque converter pin
should be OK.
Actions if the above checks are OK:
Replace converter dome with oil pump as described in work instructions 2440xxx.
Actions if the sliding surface of the torque converter pin is grooved (see illustration
below for example)
