Steering hydraulics noises
E39 /M52/right-hand drive
Complaint:
On some vehicles, complaints are made of a booming noise from the steering while
manoeuvring. This noise occurs when large movements of the steering wheel are made or
when the steering wheel is moved to full lock, and is most noticeable at higher
temperatures.
Cause:
Pulsation noises from steering hydraulics.
Affected
vehicles:
E39/M52 right-hand drive
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to July 1997
Remedy:
In the event of a customer complaint, the pressure pipe, return pipe and cooler return pipe
should be renewed using the modified design.
The current design can be identified by the position of the pressure pipe behind the
steering box, viewed in the direction of travel.
Procedure:
Note:
Drain the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic tank. Do not reuse.
Bleed the power steering after assembly,
see Repair Instructions 32 13 006.
Renew the sealing rings and O-rings on all pipes opened.
Unfasten the cooler return pipe from
the oil tank.
Unfasten return pipe (arrow) and cooler
return pipe from the hydraulic cooler,
remove cooler return pipe.
