Cracking noises when clutch is operated
E36/7, E46, E39, E38, E53 with M52 TU, M54, M57, M62
Situation:
Cracking noise and/or noticeable irregularities in the last third of travel when the clutch
pedal is depressed or released.
Cause:
Self-adjusting clutch (SAC) reset mechanism
Affected vehicles:
M52 TU B20 and B25 with 5-speed manual transmission
M54 B22, B25 and B30 with 5-speed manual transmission
M57 B30 with 5-speed manual transmission
M62 B35 with 5-speed manual transmission
M62 B44 with 6-speed manual transmission
Manufacturing period:
M62 B35: September 1996 until June 2003
Remaining vehicles: Start of series production until June 2003
Action:
Replace clutch.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, replace the clutch for the improved version as described in
Repair Instructions 21 21 500.
Note:
In series production, the plastic reset ring is being replaced by a steel reset ring
between 04/03 an 06/03, depending on model.
