Airbag fault code 01/0D (MRS3): Driver's airbag
E38, E39
Complaint:
The airbag warning lamp is permanently active.
The following fault codes may be stored in the airbag control unit (MRS3) fault memory:
"01 - Driver's airbag "
"0D - Driver's airbag stage 2"
Cause:
Contact resistance at the 6-pin connector between the contact ring and the airbag centre
pad in the steering wheel leads to the fault entries stated above.
Designation of contact ring in EPC (Electronic Parts Catalogue): "Steering wheel switch
mount - also includes slip ring"
Affected vehicles:
E38, E39
Manufacturing period: September 1999 to May 2000
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, perform diagnosis with DIS or MoDiC. Work through the
corresponding test module.
If the cause of the fault is given as "Driver's airbag, resistance too high", replace the centre
pad. Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing or replacing airbag unit"
Repair Instructions 3234020.
It is not permissible to replace the "Airbag module adapter wire" alone. In the majority of
cases, the contact ring is not defective.
