Reduction in number variants of intake and exhaust valves
E39 / M51
Situation:
The same torque-optimized M51 diesel engine is installed in the E39 as in the E38. In
contrast to the E38 version, however, the intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder head
are not of "Nimonic" alloy due to the lower load system.
Vehicles affected:
E39 with M51 from the start of series production to Aug. 31, 1996
Action:
In order to promote the standardized use of identical parts throughout the complete product
range, we will begin fitting the "Nimonic valves" in the E39, too, as of Model Year 1997.
Procedure:
When replacing the cylinder head on one of the affected vehicles, e.g. due to a proven leak
or serious material distortion, the valves removed when disassembling the engine must not
be fitted in the new cylinder head; they must be replaced with "Nimonic" valves.
The "Nimonic" valves differ from the old type in that the embossed recess in the valve head
is larger (see figure - Variant A).

Exhaust valve (6x)

There is no need to dispose of or return your stocks of the old type of engine valve, since
they can still be used in M41 and M51 engines installed in E34 and E36 vehicles.
