Water ingress through luggage compartment lid

E39 touring

Complaint: 

If the luggage compartment lid is opened in the rain or immediately after taking the car
through a car wash, water drips into the luggage compartment.

Cause: 

Design. Banked-up water cannot run off quickly enough.

Affected
vehicles:

E39 touring 
Manufacturing period: Start of series production until calendar week 14/1998.

Remedy: 

Since week 14/98, additional foam rubber parts have been installed during production
under the luggage compartment lid trim parts.

Procedure:

Remove both luggage compartment lid trim panels (see Fig. 1).

Figure 1

Glue a 20 x 15 x 16 mm foam rubber strip to the swage in area of the hinges on both sides
of the lid (see Fig. 2).
