Loud squealing/scraping noises
E39 with basic front axle
Complaint:
Loud squealing or scraping noises from the front left or front right wheel brake, both when
braking and not braking.
Cause:
Foreign matter (grit or small stones) caught between the brake disc and brake shield.
Affected
vehicles:
520i/A, 523i/A, 528i/A and 525tds/A incl. touring models
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to 10/97
Remedy:
If you receive a complaint from a customer , remove the foreign matter between the brake
disc and the brake shield.
To prevent this problem from reoccurring, retrofit an additional deflector plate to the brake
shield on both sides (left and right), as described in the following procedure.
Notes:
-
The deflector plates are made of coated aluminium and for this reason are not
painted.

The additional deflector plates will be fitted as standard as of 09/97.
Procedure:
-
Remove both front wheels.

Remove both front brake discs.
-
Visually check the brake shields to make sure they are still in perfect condition.
Replace cracked brake shields.
Note:
The brake shield must only be secured to fixing point A using the shank screw and
spring lock washer (compensates for thermal expansion).
