Diverse Car & Key Memory settings do not work temporarily

E38, E39

Complaint:

One or more of the following Car & Key Memory settings do not work temporarily and are
not stored by the respective remote control key.

· 

"Selective central locking"

· 

"Automatic lock" after pulling away

· 

"Seat/mirror memory - seat adjustment"

· 

Button settings on the control panel of the automatic air conditioning (option 534),
such as:

- 

Automatic air distribution

- 

Temperature setting

- 

Blower setting

Cause:

The Car & Key Memory functions are inactive when the tailgate lock is in the horizontal
position (hotel or workshop position) and a basic module with software status 2.1 is
installed in the vehicle. 

The programmed settings are restored as soon as the tailgate lock is returned to the
vertical position.

Affected 
vehicles:

E38, E39 
Manufacturing period: September 1998 until August 1999

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint, the basic module with software status 2.1 must be replaced
by a basic module with software status 2.2 or later.

Procedure:

1.

Connect the DIS or MoDiC to the vehicle and read out the fault memory.

2.

Select "Encoding / Programming".

3.

Select "Car Memory".

4.

Select "Print list".

Follow the DIS instructions to print out a complete list of all settings programmed in the Car
& Key Memory.

5.

Replace basic module

6.

Install basic module with software status 2.2 or later.

7.

Recode the basic module with DIS or MoDiC.

8.

Reprogram the Car & Key Memory with DIS or MoDiC in accordance with the list
printout (see step 4).
