CD53 or MD53 radio (option 650/651): Inoperable with ignition key in position "0"

Complaint:

1. 

If the CD53 or MD53 radio is activated by pressing the on/off button while the ignition
key is in position "0", nothing appears in the display of the multi-information display
(MID). It is not possible to operate the radio in this situation.

However, if the radio is switched on at the "Audio" button within 70 seconds of the
ignition key being turned to position "0", neither the display nor the operation of the
radio will indicated any sign of a fault.

2. 

If the key is left in position "0" for longer than 70 seconds, the radio can only be
switched on by pressing the "Audio" button twice.

With the ignition key in position "1" or if the ignition is switched on, the radio can be
switched on and operated without complaint.

Cause:

In case of complaint 1: 
Software error in radio. 

In case of complaint 2: 
Software error in MID.

vehicles:

E39, E53 with BMW Business CD radio (option 650) or BMW Business MD radio (option
651) 
Manufacturing period: 
E39: September 2000 to May 2001 
E53: October 2000 to May 2001

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, check whether the customer's description matches the
given fault pattern.

In case of complaint 1:

Replace the radio.

Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing / replacing radio receiver",
RA 65 11 030.

In case of complaint 2:

Replace the MID.

Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing / replacing multi-information
display (MID / IRIS)", 
RA 65 81 010.
