Transmission failsafe program indicator

E39 with basic instrument cluster

Complaint: 

The automatic transmission indicator/warning light intermittently comes on in the instrument
cluster.

Note:

There is no fault in the automatic transmission! The vehicle is not in failsafe mode.

There is no fault stored in the transmission control unit, but fault 11 (AGS signal cable
faulty) is stored in the instrument cluster.

Cause: 

Data transmitted by the transmission control unit is in part misinterpreted by the basic
instrument cluster.

Affected
vehicles:

520iA, 523iA, 528iA and 525tdsA with basic instrument cluster and 
software 9.0 and 10.0

Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to 08/97

In 09/97 series production of the instrument cluster switched to software version 11.0.

Procedure:

In the event of a customer complaint, the fault memory of the transmission control unit and
that of the instrument cluster must be interrogated. If fault 11 (AGS signal cable faulty) is
stored in the instrument cluster, the situation is to be remedied by installing the instrument
cluster with software version 11.0.

Note:

The transmission control unit is not to be replaced for this complaint!
