Hard gearshift 3rd-4th / 4th-3rd, emergency program with various fault entries

E38, E39  with A5S440Z (5HP24)

Situation:

It cannot be ruled out that in the vehicle manufacturing period 12 July 2000 to 28 July 2000,
some 5HP24 automatic transmissions were installed with a faulty sealing ring in the B
clutch. 
Depending on the degree of damage, a faulty sealing ring can cause the following
complaints: 

- 

Hard 3rd-4th gear upshift

- 

Hard 4th-3rd gear downshift when coasting

- 

Emergency program in conjunction with one or more of the following fault codes in the
transmission fault memory:

· 

Fault code 56 (symptom: GLÜ = governed load transfer)

· 

Fault code 49 (symptom: gear monitoring)

· 

Fault code 58 (GLÜ monitoring 3rd-4th gear)

· 

Fault code 54 (gear monitoring 4th gear)

· 

Fault code 55 (gear monitoring 5th gear)

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, read off the fault memory, as described under "Situation"
and check the transmission serial number. If the transmission serial number is within the
range given for the vehicle model, replace the transmission.
