Intake air manifold leaking
E31, E38, E39 with M62
Situation:
Leaks in the intake air manifold can adversely affect the idling characteristics of the M62
engine. The fault entry 27 and/or 35 with the fault type "Mixture at the Lambda oxygen
sensor too lean" is stored in the DME fault memory. In such cases, the "Check engine"
lamp will light up on US vehicles.
Leaks can occur
-
at the gaskets between the manifold and the cylinder heads due to the different
thermal expansion characteristics of the different components
-
at the vacuum connections on the rear end cover of the manifold due to porous
sealing caps or connections
Affected
vehicles:
E31, E38, E39 with M62 engine
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to October 1997
Action:
In the event of a customer complaint , the gaskets between the manifold and cylinder
heads and the sealing caps on the vacuum connections on the rear end cover of the
manifold should be replaced. In addition, the sealing cap and the vacuum connection for
the fuel pressure regulating valve should be secured with a retainer ring.
Procedure:
1.
Remove the intake air manifold
Please refer to repair instructions 11 61 050
2.
Replace the sealing cap (1) on the vacuum connection and secure it with a retainer
ring (2) (please refer to Fig. 1)
3.
Secure the fuel pressure regulating valve vacuum hose with a retainer ring (2) (please
refer to Fig. 1)
Note:
The retainer rings (2) should be fitted so that the lugs on the retainer rings point
downwards and sit against the sealing cover
4.
Renew the sealing cap (3) on the vacuum connection (E31 only)
(please refer to Fig. 1)
5.
Install the intake air manifold using new gaskets
