Sucking/whistling noises at full load (2,000 - 3,000 rpm)
E39 / M52, M62
Complaint:
On some vehicles, complaints have been received of a whistling noise at full load in the
engine speed range 2,000 to 3,000 rpm. On the M52 engine, a rattling noise may also be
heard.
Cause:
Flowing noise at the throttle valve, transmitted into the vehicle interior via the by-pass hose
(intake filter housing) and the body (support carrier).
A series modification is planned for April 1998.
Affected
vehicles:
E39/M52, M62 with additional air intake
Manufacturing period:
Start of series production until February 1997: Vehicles converted as per Service

December 1996 to February 1997: National version 864 or 812
March 1997 to March 1998: All
Remedy:
Only in the event of a customer complaint:
Shorten the by-pass hose and line the front right (M62) or front left (M52) side wall with
foam.
Procedure:
To shorten the by-pass hose:

Remove the intake filter housing:
Please refer to repair instructions 13 71 000.

Shorten the by-pass hose by 30 cm and re-install on the intake filter housing.
To line the front right (M62) or front left (M52) side wall with foam:

Comply with safety tips and notes on processing and risks on the tin. When working
with foam, avoid direct contact between the foam and the skin.

Ensure that the foam has a uniform green colour as it emerges from the tin. If this is
not the case, remove the green base cap again, press the red trigger fully in again and
repeat the shaking process.
