Starter races without DME relay
E39 / S62 / M5
Complaint:
If the master relay is removed or defective, the DME control unit will actuate the starter
motor as soon as the ignition is turned on, as if the starter switch were activated.
Effect:
The vehicle does not start but can actively move if a gear is engaged.
The operation of the immobilizer is not bypassed. Fuel injection is not active as there is no
voltage in the master relay.
Cause:
Software error in the DME program.

Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to July 1999
Procedure:
Inform the service department of the situation.
Service reprogramming during next visit to the workshop, new program status for service
from BMW CD-ROM V19.0 (from September 1999).
More precise information to follow.
Series production updated to new program status.
