Difficult gear change from 3rd gear
M5/E39 and 540i/E39
Complaint:
Gear change from 3rd gear is only possible with increased effort.
Cause:
The arrester ball guide for 3rd gear selector rod in the transmission becomes disengaged.
Result: Gear change from 3rd gear is only possible with increased effort.
Affected
vehicles:
M5 E39 and 540i E39 with transmission S6S 420G (D-transmission)
Manufacturing period: Start of series production until 12/99
Remedy:
Improved guidance by conversion from arrester balls to arrester sleeves.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, the arrester balls on the transmission selector rods should
be replaced with arrester sleeves, as described
in Repair Instructions 26 .. ... (Replacing locking sleeves on shift rods - S6S 420G).
