Deactivating and reactivating airbags / belt reminder

All Model series
from Model Year 1994

Situation:

At the customer's express request and at his sole responsibility, the following airbags can
be deactivated and reactivated:

•

the front-passenger airbag

•

the front-left and/or front-right side airbags

Note: Whenever mention is made in this Service Information bulletin of side airbag, the
head airbag is not included.

•

the rear-left and/or rear-right side airbags

(only E38, E39, E46, E53, E60, E61, E65, E66, E83)

Important:

It is possible that country-specific legislation prohibits the deactivation of certain
airbags.
In cases of doubt, contact Technical Advice before implementing the measure.

Important note when travelling with children:

Children younger than 12 years of age or smaller than 150 cm may only travel if they are
secured in suitable child restraint systems. Child restraint systems may only be used on the
front passenger seat when the airbags are deactivated, as otherwise there is a substantial
risk of injury to the children if the airbags are inflated, even if they are seated in a child
restraint system. 
If it is not possible to ensure that children are unable to lean out of their seat towards the
door trim when side airbags are fitted in the rear, the side airbags should be deactivated as
they could otherwise cause serious injury if they are triggered.

Furthermore, at the customer's express request and at his sole responsibility, the audible
seat belt reminder for the front passenger can be deactivated and reactivated as follows in
the model series.

Driver and front passenger

Front passenger only

E60, E61, E63, E64, E65, E66, E70

E53

E85, E86

E87

E90, E91, E92

It is currently not possible to deactivate the belt reminder in the R56.

Affected vehicles:

E34, E36 (except Z3) 
Europe version, manufacturing period since September 1993.
