Air-conditioning system leak detectors
In the past, a test was carried out on a representative cross-section of the air-conditioning
system leak detectors available on the market. It was found that not all leak-detecting
methods and equipment are technically suitable or economically viable.
Two leak-detecting methods are worth mentioning:
Leakage check with "sniffing units"
A distinction must be made between the two different detection methods the devices
use to detect leaks.
Measuring with halogen leak detector (ion analysis)
Inexpensive devices which, however, are sensitive to several different gas types
and gas-emitting materials (e.g., fuel, window cleaners, preserving agents,
refrigerants etc.). The size of the leak in the air conditioning system cannot be
determined exactly. The devices do, however, show results sufficient to detect
leaks. With a little practice, it is easy to use this recommended device effectively.

Measuring with mass spectrometers
Although this unit is extremely accurate when detecting gases and can also select
the detected gases and determine the rate of leakage, it does not guarantee that
smaller leaks are detected. The gas selection and leakage rate detection are very
costly; for this reason, these devices are not economically viable for the service
Leakage check with fluorescent substances
The leak-detection method in which the use of ultraviolet indicators is necessary must
be rejected. We cannot ensure that the vehicle components now in use will not be
damaged (deformed gaskets, metal corrosion, change in oil viscosity). In addition, the
method is difficult to handle because the lamps that are to be used cannot light up all
possible leakage points on the vehicle.
The leak detectors are delivered only on order.
