Sliding/tilt sunroof
The electric sliding/tilt sunroof for the E60 is a glass sunroof. The electric sliding/tilt sunroof has its own control
unit. The convenience functions of the sliding/tilt sunroof (convenience opening/convenience closing) are
controlled by the Car Access System (CAS).

Panorama glass sunroof
Like the E83 and the E53, the E61 can be fitted with a panorama glass sunroof. The front glass panel can be
fully opened or raised. The rear glass panel can be raised. This panorama glass sunroof has a wind deflector for
reducing wind noise inside the passenger compartment: positioning of the wind deflector is speed-controlled.

Automatic opening and closing of the tailgate
The tailgate of the E61 opens either when a button in the handle is pressed, or automatically in response to a
signal from the remote control unit. The tailgate is closed manually by pressing a button set in the tailgate. The
tailgate also has an automatic soft-close function controlled by means of the remote control unit. It takes
approximately 6 to 8 seconds to open or close the tailgate automatically.
The automatic soft-close function assists the hydraulic system, because the resistance of the rubber sealing
strip has to be overcome as the tailgate closes. An eccentric pin engages the lock of the tailgate. An electric
motor turns the eccentric pin downward. The force applied in this way overcomes the resistance of the rubber
sealing strip, drawing the tailgate down so that it closes correctly.
The rear window opens slightly when the button underneath the rear wiper is pressed, or when the button on the
remote control unit is actuated. The rear window is top-hinged and opens for loading and unloading. The rear
window closes when it is pushed down into the closed position.

Anti-theft alarm system
The anti-theft alarm system (DWA) detects and reports attempts at intrusion and tampering with the vehicle. The
vehicle interior is monitored by an ultrasonic interior protection system ( UltraschallInnenraumschutz, USIS). If an
attempt is made to gain access to the vehicle interior, an acoustic alarm is triggered from an emergency power
siren and a visual alarm via the lighting system (hazard warning lights). A tilt alarm sensor is tripped if the vehicle
is raised or taken in tow. The tilt alarm sensor responds by triggering the anti-theft alarm.

Passive safety system
At this time, BMW is the only carmaker to offer the "Advanced Safety Electronics" (ASE) passive safety system.
ASE is based on the byteflight high-speed, optical data bus. Individual sensors permit optimum control of the
pyrotechnical components of the restraint system (e.g. airbags, belt tensioners and active head restraints). The
safety and gateway module (SGM) has the role of superordinate control unit and intelligent star coupler.
Moreover, the SGM also make available an energy reserve for the entire safety system in the event of the power
failing in an accident. If the accident severity is above a certain threshold the electric fuel pump is switched off.
The safety battery terminal (SBK) separates the starter motor and the alternator from the battery's positive post.
The onboard power supply is connected to the battery. This means that all emergency functions are retained In
the event of a crash.

iDrive, central information display and controller
The E65 saw the debut of iDrive. It marked the assumption by BMW of leadership in the development of new
operator communication systems. Evolution of the iDrive system was continued for the E60 and E61.
