Fault code memory entries in the DME: 27C5, 27AF and 27B2

Situation:
Under certain operating conditions, vacuum-controlled shut-off valves (secondary air
valves) may provide insufficient vacuum for the engine. Consequently, the shut-off valves
do not open.
Effect:
The catalytic converter will not heat up correctly during the warm-up phase if the shut-off
valves (secondary air valves) do not open. A possible consequence is failure of the oxygen
sensor due to water shock.
In addition, the following fault codes are entered in the fault code memory of the DME
(digital motor electronics):

27C5Hot-film air mass meter (HFM) defective

27AFair pump inactive

27B2Main secondary air throughput
Affected vehicles:
E60 / M5
Production period: from start of series production up to July 2005
Action:
If one of the above fault code entries is found after reading out the fault code memory, the
shut-off valves for both sides must be replaced by self-opening shut-off valves.
The vacuum line no longer required on each cylinder bank is closed off with a plug.
Procedure:
Remove shut-off valves on both sides and replace by new type of shut-off valve.
Shorten vacuum line (1) on both
cylinder banks down to dimension (A).
A = 30 mm
Close off outlet of both vacuum lines (1)
with end plug (2).
Secure vacuum line (1) on both cylinder
banks in retaining fixture (3).
