Rolling text on radio
All models with RDS radio
Situation:
For some time now various private radio stations have been broadcasting information in the
form of rolling text instead of the using the usual static 8-digit station name.
For example:
Station: "ANTENNE BAYERN"
Normal display: ANTENNE
Rolling display: ANTENNE => BAYERN => SCHNEE (snow) => UND EIS (and ice)
or: ANTENNE => BAYERN => *HITS* => HÖREN (hear the hits)
Although this kind of information does not correspond to the current RDS norm, several
private stations have already indicated interest in broadcasting other information than just
the name of the station.
Effect:
When storing stations, it is no longer possible to be certain that the actual name of the
station has been stored. If several stations are transmitting rolling displays in one
transmission area, it is virtually impossible for the seek and station identification system to
get a hold on particular stations.
This can lead to complaints and annoyance on the part of the customer.
The BMW Professional generates 3-digit abbreviations for RDS stations which can be
received - e.g. "ANT"-> Antenne Bayern. However, since the introduction of rolling text this
is no longer possible. In this instance, it is only possible to use the abbreviations L-1...L-9
and L-A... L-Z, for local radio stations.
Affected
vehicles:
All vehicles with an RDS radio.
Procedure:
Please inform the customer of this situation in the event of complaints.
Important:
Since there is nothing physically wrong with the equipment or system, its renewal does
nothing to alleviate the problem. Clearly no warranty claims can be accepted under
these circumstances.
