Towing away with gear engaged (SMG vehicles)
E60 / M5E63 / M6
Situation:
The SMG (sequential manual transmission) is fitted as standard on the E60 / M5 and on
the E63 / M6. SMG vehicles can only be started when the selector lever is in "neutral". If a
fault develops in the SMG or elsewhere in the vehicle and the vehicle is parked with a gear
engaged, it cannot be ruled out that the gear cannot be disengaged and that as a result,
the engine cannot be started. In such cases, the drive train from the engine to the rear
wheel is closed.
Effect:
Towing the vehicle without the rear wheels raised will cause the engine to be turned by the
rear wheels, possibly resulting in engine damage. This risk is particularly high if the engine
is being turned in the wrong direction (e.g. towing backwards with a forward gear
engaged).
Affected
vehicles:
E60 / M5 and E63 / M6
Procedure:
If a gear is engaged, SMG vehicles (M5 and M6) may only be towed with the rear axle
raised. This also applied for very short distances, e.g. out of a garage.
