Material changeover V8 Crankcase
M60, M62
Situation:
In March 1997 the changeover of the M62 crankcase from a Nikasil coating to an Alusil-
alloy (ditto for M70/73) in worldwide series production will be completed.
The changeover to the new crankcase version took place for each specific country at
different times.
This changeover also affects the M60/M62 exchange engine production.
The pistons/piston rings from the Nikasil engine may not be installed in the Alusil engine or
vice-versa due to the changed material mating (iron-coated instead of tin-plated). Other
components, such as cylinder heads, crankshafts etc., are not affected by the change and
can continue to be used.
Affected
vehicles:
E31, E32, E34, E38 with M60,
E31, E38, E39 with M62.
Manufacturing period: From start of series production up to March 1997.
Procedure:
Before the start of repairs/ordering parts, it must be ensured which type of engine (Alusil or
Nikasil) is concerned.
Distinguishing characteristics:
Alusil/Nikasil engines can be distinguished based on the cast-in unmachined part number.
The unmachined part number is located on the crankcase at the right near the coolant drain
screw.
