Enhanced fording capability

E38, E39

Situation: 

Although BMW vehicles are designed to ford any depth of road surface water that can be
expected within reason, it is still possible under extreme circum-
stances, when roads become flooded during exceptional rainfall, for the engine to induct
water together with the intake air. If a large amount of water finds its way into the
combustion chamber, mechanical block leads to what is known as "water shock", the result
of which is often total engine damage.

To further enhance fording capability under such extreme conditions the air intake has
been relocated to a higher position (in series production). This modification is recognisable
through the additional bypass air hose fitted in the engine compartment between the intake
silencer and the supporting member connected to the side panel. This modification can be
retrofitted on vehicles in the field.

Affected
vehicles:

Vehicles with option 864 or national version 812 ("critical countries"):

E39: From the start of series production up to December 96
E38/M60/M62/M73: From the start of series production up to September 96
E38/M52: From the start of series production up to January 97
E38/M51: From the start of series production up to January 97

Remaining vehicles in all countries:

E39: From the start of series production up to March 97
E38/M51: From the start of series production up to February 97
E38/rest: From the start of series production up to January 97

Action: 

In these cases a permanent bypass can be incorporated upstream of the intake silencer
through which part of the air required by the engine is inducted in the upper area of the
wheelhouse.

Procedure:

To retrofit this modification, follow the instructions given in enclosures 1 to 3:
