Failure of air conditioning operating unit

E38 with automatic air conditioning system (IHKA)

Complaint: 

Malfunction of IHKA operating unit display function; no or only meaningless displays.
Operation of the automatic air conditioning system  not possible.

Cause: 

IHKA circuit board fitted with incorrect resistor.

Affected
vehicles:

E38 with automatic air conditioning system (option 534), standard equipment M73 and 
US models
Manufacturing period: November 1994 up to November 1995

Remedy: 

In case of customer complaint, the unnecessary resistor R58 should be removed from the
circuit board of the IHKA operating unit.

Procedure:

See Enclosure 1.

Important:

The components of the IHKA operating unit are highly sensitive to electrostatic
charges. It is essential that the IHKA operating unit is placed on an anti-static
mat for the duration of the repair! In order to balance the electrostatic charge,
wear the wrist sleeve and connect this to the anti-static mat, which should also
be earthed. Connect the long output cable from the earth distributor to a suitable
earth distributor (e.g. central heating radiator, water pipe - Item 8, Figure 1).

Connect the second earth cable connector (Item 6, Figure 1) on the anti-static
mat with a cable and crocodile clip to the IHKA operating unit housing.
