Howling noise from rear differential

E65/E66 with N62

Complaint:

Howling noise from rear differential in speed range 120 to 140 km/h under moderate load.

Cause:

Gear teeth noise from rear differential is induced into the body via the propeller shaft.

Affected vehicles:

E65/E66 with N62 
Production: start of series production until week 42/2002

Remedy:

Replace propeller shaft with a propeller shaft with 2-stage flexible coupling.

Procedure:

In case of customer complaint, install the propeller shaft with 2-stage flexible coupling and
the transmission output flange with modified hole diameter as described in Repair
Instructions 26 11 000 or

24 13 012.

Note:

The bolt connection of the flexible coupling to the transmission output flange
must only be tightened at the retaining nut.

Important

Tightening at the bolt head causes the flexible coupling bushing to twist.
The effect of the flexible coupling is then no longer available and further
complaints could result.
