Automatic luggage compartment lid failure
E65, E66 with automatic luggage compartment lid actuation (option 316)
Complaint:
The automatic luggage compartment lid no longer reaches its end position when it is
operated, or the function fails completely.
Cause:
At high temperatures in the luggage compartment, hydraulic fluid is able to escape through
the hydraulic lines.
This can cause the hydraulic fluid level in the fluid reservoir to drop below the minimum
level needed for operation.
Affected vehicles:
E65, E66 with automatic luggage compartment lid actuation (option 316)
Manufacturing period: start of series production until February 2003
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, check which hydraulic lines are fitted, and if necessary,
replace the hydraulic cylinder and the hydraulic lines, and then correct the fluid level in the
hydraulic unit.
To do this, proceed as follows:
1.
Check the version of the hydraulic lines:
a)
White lettering: hydraulic lines faulty, continue with point 2.
b)
Yellow lettering: hydraulic lines OK, continue troubleshooting.
2.
Replace the hydraulic cylinder and the hydraulic lines.
Please refer to Repair Instructions "Removing and installing / replacing hydraulic
cylinder for boot lid (electrohydraulic / fully automatic)", 51 24 151.
3.
Correct the fluid level in the hydraulic unit.
Please refer to Repair Instructions "Correcting fluid level in hydraulic unit for luggage
compartment lid actuation (electrohydraulic/fully automatic)", 51 24 660.

necessary hydraulic fluid.
