Water and dirt-resistant windscreen

Situation: 

Water and dirt-resistant windscreens have been in use for several years in the field of
aviation and in BMW Motorsport and have shown positive effects.

Resistance to water and dirt is achieved by applying a special solution which diffuses into
the surface of the windscreen.

Effect: 

Once the solution has penetrated a surface, e.g. the windscreen, drops of water are unable
to join up to form a film. At speeds above about 60 km/h 
(40 mph), they are immediately blown away by the air flow.

The effectiveness of the treatment gradually starts to reduce after about a year, depending
on environmental conditions such as rain and snow.
A retreatment kit can be used to refresh the declining effectiveness.

The "retreatment kit" can of course also be used to treat all BMW models in the field, if the
customer so requires.

Additional benefits:

-

Clear view in contrary climatic conditions (rain, snow) and enhanced safety, e.g. when
overtaking lorries on a wet road surface.

Reduced windscreen contamination due to insects:
Insect remains and similar can be removed with a minimum of effort by the windscreen
wipers.

Reduces glare (light diffusion):
When driving at night in the rain.

-

Greatly reduced dirt levels:
Especially when driving on surfaces where road salts are being whirled up.

Reduced wiper blade wear:
The wiper blade rubber is spared due to reduced wiper operation.

Improved wiping quality and noise levels:
The wipers no longer scrape or squeak, especially when the windscreen is only slightly
wet.

-

Wash cycles and intermittent washes are required less frequently:
The reduced water consumption increases the range available with the washing water
in the reservoir.

-

The effectiveness of the treatment is not impaired by waxing, screen washer solution
or antifreeze, insect removers, steam, fuel or oil.

Affected
vehicles:

For the first time, all E31 models produced since October 1997 have windscreens treated
with a water and dirt-resistant coating.

Procedure:

Instructions as to the procedure to be followed for retreatment are enclosed in the said kit.

Parts: 

Availability of parts is currently in the process of being assured.
