Noises/vibrations when steering

E53 / M57, M57TU 
with Servotronic

Complaint:

"Ringing"/rattling when steering. These vibrations can be felt primarily at the steering wheel,
but sometimes also in the area of the body. 
Definitions:

1. 

"Ringing" 
This phenomenon occurs in the following situations:

- 

When turning steering wheel back to straight-ahead position (mainly left turn on
LHD vehicles). This occurs both at standstill and when turning.

- 

Depends on the steering-angle speed (certain steering-angle speed range), oil
and steering system temperature, traction between tyres and road surface,
engine speed (pump speed, volumetric flow)

The phenomenon manifests itself as follows:

- 

High-frequency vibrations that can be felt lightly at the steering wheel (tickling,
clearly audible horn-like noise).

2. 

Rattling 
This phenomenon occurs in the following situations:

-

The phenomenon manifests itself as follows:

- 

Not quite so high-frequency vibrations as "ringing", but can be easily felt at the
steering wheel (torsional vibrations)

Important: 
For neither complaint is it necessary for impulses to be given from unevenness in the road
surface.

Moreover, the complaint does not have an effect on the vehicle's operation. The problem
can be regarded purely as a matter of comfort.

Cause:

Hydraulic pressure pulses within the steering system.

Affected 
vehicles:

E53, M57/M57TU with servotronic (option 216) 
Manufacturing period: start of series production up to July 2004

Remedy:

In case of customer complaint, install an optimised steering box.

Procedure: 

- 

Install optimised steering box as described in RA 32 13 061.

- 

On vehicles with date of production earlier than May 2002, the steering box must also
be recoded with the current DIS CD.

Proceed as follows:
