Checking ribbed V-belt
E53 / M54, M57, M62
Situation:
Extreme operating conditions - frequent off-road driving with fording and driving through
mud, frequent operation in dusty or sandy terrain - can result in an unusually high degree of
wear on the ribbed V-belt (main drive).
Effect:
In unfavorable circumstances, a worn ribbed V-belt could slip briefly during fording of if it is
splashed with water.
Affected vehicles:
E53/M54, M57, M62 B44, M62 B46
Manufacturing period: throughout series production
Action:
On vehicles that have frequently been driven under extreme operating conditions, it is
advisable to check the ribbed V-belt (main drive), and to replace it as necessary, during
each engine oil service.
A general revision or supplement to the scope of maintenance work will not be made.
Procedure:

Remove ribbed V-belt - please refer to repair instructions, job item 11 28 010

Measure the thickness (H

) of the ribbed V-belt (see illustration).
Measure the thickness (H
1
) of the "folded" ribbed V-belt (see illustration).
