Checking electro-mechanical parking brake (EMF) during periodic vehicle inspection
E65, E66, E67, E68 / 7-SeriesE70 / X5
Situation:
Because of its technical characteristics, the electromechanical parking brake (EMF) on the
new BMW
7-Series (from E65) and the new BMW X5 (E70) and their variants has to be examined
during the periodic vehicle inspection in accordance with the "Vehicle manufacturer system
data", i.e. as described below.
Please refer to §29 StVZO, Appendix VIIIa; 41st revision of 3 March 2006
The contents of relevant international brakes guidelines, for example ECE-R-13H, EU
Guidelines 71/320/EEC and the latest version
98/12/EC and 96/96/EC have been taken fully into account.
Listed as the special characteristic of this brake system is that (unlike a purely mechanical
system) its braking force is not built up continually, but rather, due to its electromechanical
operation, much quicker and without "dosage".
Because of its greater dynamics compared to conventional brake systems, greater left/right
discrepancies can occur which could cause the brake dynamometer to switch off early.
This could cause the testing staff to enter the brake system as "not OK" even though the
braking forces exceed the legal minimums.
It must be noted that the EMF only works on the duo-servo brake shoes on the rear axle
when the engine is switched off. Only in this state can the EMF's braking effect be check
properly.
When the engine is running, the braking effect of the ABS and DSC hydraulic unit is
applied to all four wheels despite the EMF parking brake switch being activated.
Affected vehicles:
Model series: E65, E66, E67, E68 and E70
Model: 730d, 730i, 735i, 740d, 740i, 745d, 750i, 760i;
X5 (from Model Year 2007)
Procedure:
1.
Visual and functional check of control and warning devices:
Note:
For the check, the ignition must be switched on, the selector lever must be in
position "N" and the engine must not be running.
1.1 Activate parking brake with button or actuating lever as follows (see Figs. 1 and 2):
-
Model series E65 / 7 Series > Press button
-
Model series E70 / X5 > Pull actuating lever
