Agitation of the bonnet at high speed
E85
Complaints:
Speeds of more than 200 km/h (usually but sometimes below this) can lead to agitation of
the bonnet ("Bonnet flapping").
Cause:
At high speeds, the ventilation duct in the engine compartment may lead to increased ram
pressure in the engine compartment on the vehicles concerned. The bonnet is however
securely closed.
Affected vehicles:
E85
Production period: start of series production up to May 2003
Procedure:
In the event of a customer complaint retouch the engine compartment shielding.
To do this, proceed as follows:
1.
Disassemble the engine compartment shielding.
See Repair Instructions "Remove and refit/replace front assembly underside
protection", RA 51 47 490.
2.
The engine compartment shielding must be cut out in accordance with the
specifications in the following illustrations. In figure 1 the two places concerned are
marked with an arrow and are shown in grey.
Figure 2 represents the left-hand side of the cutting line. To improve rigidity of the
engine compartment shielding, a rib of approx. 2 - 3 mm must be cut out.
