Hydraulic Control Assembly - Antilock Brakes: Service and Repair
Accumulator Discharge Procedure
The ABS pump/motor assembly will keep the hydraulic accumulator charged to a pressure between 13,790 - 17930 kPa (2000 - 2600 psi) anytime that
the ignition is in the "RUN" position. The pump/motor assembly cannot run if the ignition is off or if either battery cable is disconnected. Disconnecting
the pressure switch connector or the pump/motor connector from the hydraulic unit will also prevent the pump from operating. Unless otherwise
specified, the hydraulic accumulator should be depressurized before working on any portion of the hydraulic system using the following procedure:
1. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
2. Disconnect the pressure switch connector and the pump/motor connector or disconnect the battery negative cable.
3. Apply and release the brake pedal a minimum of 25 times, using approximately 222 N (50 lbs.) of force each time.
4. Check that a noticeable change in pedal feel occurs, indicating that the accumulator is completely discharged.
5. When a definite increase in pedal effort is felt, stroke pedal a few additional times. This should remove all hydraulic pressure from the system.
