Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Installation

1.

Press adjuster pin and spring washer into shoe and lining so that pin projects .275-.283 inch from the side on which the adjuster actuator is
installed.

2.

Install adjuster shoe and lining, to front of vehicle on left side or to rear of vehicle on right side.

3.

Install parking brake lever on shoe and lining with spring washer, pin and retaining ring. Install spring washer with concave side against parking
brake lever.

4.

Attach adjuster shoe and lining to remaining shoe with lower return spring.

5.

Install both shoes on backing plate, securing with hold-down pins and springs.

6.

Install adjuster actuator, spring connecting link and actuator spring onto adjuster shoe and lining.

7.

Install adjusting screw assembly, ensuring adjuster screw engages notch in adjuster shoe. Ensure adjuster screw spring clip is properly positioned
and the adjuster actuator is properly engaged in notch in adjuster screw. Do not over extend upper return spring. The spring will be damaged
if extended length exceeds 5.49 inches.

8.

Install upper return spring by inserting angled hook end of spring through parking brake lever and shoe lining, using suitable tool to pull spring
straight across and then down to hook into crook in spring connecting link.

9.

Back off parking brake adjustment until parking brake lever rests on brake shoe.

10.

Install brake drum and tire and wheel assembly, then lower vehicle.

11.

Apply and release service brake at least 25 times, then continue to pump brake pedal until clicking noise at drum brake self adjusters stops on both
sides.

12.

Adjust parking brake.
