Brake Warning Indicator: Description and Operation
Circuit Operation
The BRAKE (Buick), BRAKE FLUID (Oldsmobile) and PARK (Oldsmobile) indicators receive battery voltage when the ignition switch is in "RUN,"
"BULB TEST," OR "START." The brake fluid level indicator switch, the ignition switch and the park brake switch are connected to the BRAKE
(Buick) Indicator so that when any one closes, the indicator lights. On Oldsmobile vehicles, the BRAKE FLUID Indicator and the LOW BRAKE FLUID
input to the Instrument Cluster are connected to the brake fluid level indicator switch and the ignition switch. The PARK Indicator is connected to the
park brake switch and the ignition switch. The ignition switch "BULB TEST" position does not have a detent, but the ignition switch should close to
ground and light the BRAKE and PARK (Oldsmobile only) indicators before the "START" position is reached.
The master cylinder brake fluid level switch closes to light the BRAKE (Buick) or BRAKE FLUID (Oldsmobile) indicator, displays the DIC LOW
BRAKE FLUID message (Oldsmobile) and briefly sounds a fast chime when there is low brake fluid in the hydraulic brake systems. This could be
caused by a leak in one of the brake lines. The engine must be running with the brake fluid level indicator switch closed for approximately 10 seconds
before the DIC LOW BRAKE FLUID message (Oldsmobile) is displayed. The switch opens by refilling the reservoir to its normal level. Make sure the
brake system has been repaired before filling the master cylinder reservoir.
The park brake switch closes when the park brake is applied, lighting the BRAKE (Buick) or PARK (Oldsmobile) indicator and the DIC PARK BRAKE
SET message (Oldsmobile) is displayed if the engine is running for approximately 10 seconds. If a vehicle has traveled approximately 50 feet with the
park brake applied, the multifunction chime (MFC) module (Buick) or the Instrument Cluster (Oldsmobile) briefly sounds a fast chime. Releasing the
park brake opens the switch and turns off the BRAKE (Buick) or PARK (Oldsmobile) indicator, turns off the DIC PARK BRAKE SET message
(Oldsmobile) and disables the chime.
